Chris Hayes was previously elected as the Federal Member for Werriwa on 19 March, 2005.
He was re-elected in a 2007 by-election to Werriwa in 2007 following Mark Latham's resignation and served until 21 August 2010.
Mr Hayes was Government Whip from 2007 to 2011 and is now the Chief Opposition Whip.
Julia Irwin, the previous member for Fowler, announced in 2009 that she would not contest the seat of Fowler in the 2010 elections.
Hayes has been the Parliamentary Representative on the Council for the National Library of Australia since 2014.
There has been no gap in Hayes’ service.
Fowler is a Labor safe seat; held by the ALP since Fowler’s creation in 1984 (during an expansion of the House of Representatives).
Key issues are health, equity, crime, education, employment, infrastructure, drugs, immigration and multiculturalism.
Fowler has the highest rate of unemployment in couple families with children (11.4%), and the highest proportion of residents born overseas (48.9% in 2010). As a result, many residents speak a language other than English at home.
Fowler may be affected by the new airport being built at Badgerys Creek.
